Signs your hot water system needs replacement

Fluctuating temperatures, rust-coloured water, or strange banging noises? Here is how to know when to repair or replace.

Step 1: Water takes too long to heat or runs out quickly

If your hot water runs cold noticeably faster than before, mineral sediment has likely built up around the lower heating element or the burner has deteriorated.

Step 2: Discoloured or rust-tinted hot water

Brown or rusty water coming specifically from hot taps indicates internal tank corrosion. Once the internal cylinder lining corrodes through, replacement is required.

Step 3: Rumbling, popping, or whistling sounds

Unusual banging noises occur when sediment hardens at the bottom of the cylinder, creating steam pockets under pressure that can fracture the storage vessel.

Step 4: Water pooling around the base of the cylinder

Moisture or slow leaks around the bottom seams of a storage cylinder signal an irreparable tank fracture requiring prompt replacement before flooding occurs.
